I previously did a few posts about my upgraded 4K video editing laptop (see here, here and here), and my raw 4K video editing desktop build.

In this post, I want to share with you my experience of using another editing computer – the HP Z640. This system was lent to me by Z Workstations, a company that customizes HP Z workstations for video, photo and audio professionals.

The benefit of going with Z Workstations, rather than HP Direct, is that they offer more configuration options and competitive prices.

In the professional editing world, the HP Z workstations are very popular. Both AVID and Autodesk have HP as their only Windows-based authorized system. Adobe raves about the HP Z workstation as well.

Here is the link to the exact system I used.

Here are the main specs:

  • 18-Core 2.3GHz Intel Xeon Haswell E5-2696 v3 [18-cores / 36-threads]

  • 64GB (1x 64GB) of 2133MHz DDR4 ECC Registered RAM

  • 500GB PCIe Flash Storage (~1500MB/s)

  • GTX Titan X 12GB (Pascal) GPU

  • Windows 10 Professional 64-bit

UPDATE! This system actually has a single 64GB memory module. Mistake was made in the video recording, which is why in the video I say there are 4 bars of 16GB memory modules.

My main impressions:

  • The processor has lots of cores

  • Nice amount of memory

  • It has very fast SM951 NVMe flash storage – it performs at about 1500MB/s

  • I like the Pascal Titan X GPU – it provides fantastic performance at a reasonable cost

Overall, it’s an nicely balanced system built with quality, high-performing components. Please watch my full review to see how well the system performs.

And here are some pics of the workstation
